Our Mission

Darrow School is dedicated to serving students with diverse backgrounds and abilities. We build on each student’s individual talents and interests to inspire and build confidence in their success in college and life. This is accomplished through our active, differentiated, inclusive curriculum, which is rooted in the liberal arts and sciences, individually focused, and combines innovative classroom instruction with projeCodect-based learning and environmental consciousness.

OUR CORE VALUES

GROWTH

We prioritize growth over perfection, recognizing that each individual has their own gifts, challenges, and goals to build from. Our students are safe to fail creatively, which is essential for true learning. They routinely revise and reflect on their work on their way toward mastery.

DIVERSITY

We believe that the opportunity to learn and grow in a small, diverse community during your formative years is irreplaceable. We actively cultivate and celebrate a student body that is diverse along many dimensions, including racial and ethnic diversity, diversity of gender identity, and neurodiversity.

COMMUNITY

Like the Shakers who inhabited this place before us, we believe in the power of an intentional community built around shared work and shared values. Darrow is deliberately small, which means that each community member is valued and influential.

COMPASSION

We seek to treat each other with compassion, recognizing that we may only know a small part of someone else’s story.

AUTHENTICITY

We aspire to be a place where young people become comfortable in their own skin and empowered to understand and share their authentic selves.

OUR CURRICULUM

A Darrow education is active, differentiated, and inclusive.

Active means that you are not just passively absorbing content but actively constructing knowledge and creating meaning. You'll experience dynamic labs, the writing process, projects, and presentations. Your work will connect to the real work of people in your discipline.

Differentiated means that our courses have clear learning goals in content and skills but offer flexibility in when and how students demonstrate their learning. Plus, we provide robust supports — office hours, additional scaffolding of assignments, supplementary materials, and coordination with Learning Skills coaches. At the same time, our faculty will challenge you in supportive ways to deepen or go beyond the core skills.

Inclusive means that our classes are welcoming, engaging, and appropriately rigorous because we honor a wide range of backgrounds, learning styles, and cultures. We work to ensure diversity in our readings, guest speakers, and lesson materials. We offer support when challenging issues arise. We communicate clear and transparent standards or assessment criteria so you know what to expect. Plus, we all grow from our mistakes, so the opportunity for revision is a part of the learning process.

HANDS-to-WORK

Hands-to-Work is more than just a community service-learning and leadership program. It's a testament to the power of our community, where students and faculty unite, learn from each other, and make a positive impact. Every Wednesday, our students don't just engage in purposeful work; they embark on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth, guided by the inspiring Shaker tradition. They share their expertise, apprentice, and rotate jobs, unearthing new interests and abilities. This collaborative effort fosters a sense of pride and leadership through service, as they work together to sustain and enrich our community at Darrow.

For many Darrow Alumni, 'Hands to Work' at Darrow is a pivotal moment that shapes their understanding. It's about transformative experiences that not only deepen their self-awareness but also open doors to new horizons. One recent graduate, Sydney '22, encapsulates this journey, sharing, 'I acquired valuable skills and a sense of responsibility. The experience paved the way for me to explore new passions, which eventually became my major in college.'

POST-GRADUATE ATHLETIC BASKETBALL PROGRAM

NOT GETTING THE LOVE IN THE COLLEGE RECRUITING PROCESS?

In response to the growing demand for post-grad programs created by today's challenging collegiate athlete environment, Darrow has introduced a post-graduate basketball program. Our Post Graduate Athletic Program is the perfect stepping stone for graduating student-athletes who would benefit from one more year of high school basketball. Some students may require more time to refine their skills and mature on the court, while others need additional time to strengthen their academic credentials. Our program is tailored to enhance students' abilities, both on and off the court, and to equip them with the skills necessary to tackle the challenges and opportunities that come their way.
